April 18, 2022

WABASCA — Family medicine physician Dr. Tarig Suliman will be practicing at the Wabasca/Desmarais Healthcare Centre and the Golden Opportunity medical clinic in Wabasca-Desmarais. Dr. Suliman began practicing on March 28 and is the first full time, permanent AHS family medicine physician in the community of Wabasca since his predecessor’s departure in 2021.

“I’m proud to be part of a government that recognizes the integral role rural family medicine physicians play in their communities,” says Pat Rehn, MLA for Lesser Slave Lake.

“Minister Copping and I remain closely engaged with community members to service disruptions caused by lack of physician coverage. Dr. Suliman’s recruitment is a step in the right direction, and I’m looking forward to working with AHS as we continue to take more steps to services remain available for people in and around Wabasca-Demarais, as well as for all Albertans in rural and remote communities.”

Alberta Health Services (AHS) continues to recruit for physicians across northern Alberta to meet community needs.

AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician attraction and retention committees.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
