HIGH LEVEL — Local and area residents now have improved access to primary care with the recruitment of another permanent family physician for the community.
Dr. Joshua Beierle is a family medicine physician who is now practising at the Northwest Health Centre and High Level Medical Clinic. Dr. Beierle joins a team of nine other family medicine physicians in the community.
"It's heartening to see family physicians choosing to practise in northern Alberta where there's so much need for them," says Dan Williams, MLA for the Peace River constituency. "Primary care plays a crucial role in keeping Albertans healthy, and Dr. Beierle setting up a permanent practice in High Level will support local and area families who are looking for the many services provided by family physicians."
Originally from Calgary, Dr. Beierle completed his medical training at the Cummings School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, and his medical residency at the University of Alberta. He started practising in High Level as a locum last September.
Dr. Beierle and his wife enjoy being active outdoors and are looking forward to getting involved in local activities, including fishing, hiking and learning to cross country ski.
"I would love to meet and learn from some of the traditional healers as well as with local Indigenous leaders to discuss how we can work together to improve care and general health and wellness in our community," he says.
Alberta Health Services (AHS) continues to recruit for physicians across northern Alberta to meet community needs. AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician attraction and retention committees.
Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Our mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans. Our current focus is on reducing emergency department wait-times, improving EMS response times, increasing access to surgeries, and improving patient flow.
