Temporary closure of Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre emergency department avoided

October 9, 2023

PONOKA — The Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre emergency department (ED) will remain open and fully operational through the evening and overnight on Sunday, October 8.

A gap in physician coverage from 5 p.m. tonight until 8 a.m. on Monday, October 9 has been filled and patients in need of emergency care will continue to be admitted to the ED at this time.

All other services at the site also continue to operate as normal.

When gaps in physician coverage are identified, Alberta Health Services has processes in place to seek locum coverage in order to avoid disruptions to services. In the majority of instances, these processes are successful, and services continue uninterrupted.

We are grateful for the support of our local physicians and staff in working to resolve this coverage gap for the community as quicky as possible.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
