CALGARY – Alberta Health Services (AHS) is investigating a gastrointestinal illness outbreak associated with Kinjo Sushi & Grill-Mahogany, located at #200, 7 Mahogany Plaza SE, Calgary, AB.
Currently, there are four confirmed cases and two probable cases associated with the outbreak. All confirmed and probable cases reported eating food at the facility on or around Sept. 18, 2026. Based on current testing, the pathogen associated with the outbreak has been identified as Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). Individuals who consumed food or beverages at the facility on or around Sept. 18 and 19 may have been exposed to STEC.
What is STEC?
STEC is a type of bacteria that spreads when someone comes into contact with food or water contaminated by fecal matter. Person to person transmission may also occur when someone does not wash their hands after using the washroom. It often causes nausea, vomiting and diarrhea with stomach cramps and generally goes away without treatment. Dehydration, caused by diarrhea, is the most common complication. More information about STEC can be found on MyHealthAlberta.

Public health officials are working to identify the source of the infection, assess any ongoing risk and prevent additional illnesses. A public health inspection conducted on Sept. 28, 2026, found no critical violations at the facility. There are no other reported cases of STEC linked to this facility at this time. The restaurant remains open while the investigation continues.
