Alberta Coding Access Targets for Surgery (ACATS)

Provide a standardized way to identify surgical bottlenecks, streamline surgical booking and prioritize elective surgeries across the province depending on patients’ diagnosis and level of urgency.

ACATS codes and processes are currently being built into Connect Care as part of the surgical booking process and surgical wait time analytics strategy.

Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine Standing Committee

The committee functions to facilitate resolution, create connections and support joint decision making on issues affecting Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine provincially. Clinical and operational leaders partner to communicate, align and action the significant priorities of the specialty and inform the strategy of the SCN.

Projects proposed for implementation and operationalization in Alberta are brought to the committee for endorsement, discussion, and connection with relevant teams.

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS)

ERAS is a multidisciplinary, multi-modal approach for providing best practice care before, during and after surgery. Drawing from best practices and evidence from around the world, ERAS improves patient care related to nutrition, mobility after surgery, fluid management, anesthesia and pain control.

By bringing physicians and clinical care teams together to implement ERAS international guidelines at local sites, teams are able to help patients stay strong, recover faster with fewer complications, and lower healthcare costs.

Evidence Decision Support Program (EDSP)

Multi-stakeholder initiative that guides decisions on the responsible introduction of new health technologies. The program helps local decision makers integrate evidence into practice and evaluate innovative technologies in a local context to optimize safety, efficacy, impact and value for patients and clinicians.

Quality Improvement Programs

  • Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Accreditation & Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP)
Focuses on advancing safe, high-quality care for bariatric surgical patients through the accreditation of bariatric surgical centers.
  • National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP)
In place at Alberta’s 16 largest hospitals, NSQIP teams use clinical data (including post-operative outcomes) to understand and improve performance.
  • Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP)
Uses standardized data collection to help trauma care providers measure and improve patient care, and system efficiency.
  • Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI)
Uses data collection focused specifically on vascular procedures to improve patient care and outcomes.
