Undergraduate nurse employees (UNEs) provide patient care under the supervision of registered nurses (RN) or registered psychiatric nurses (RPN). The goal is to further develop the UNE's competencies in RN or RPN practices as they work as part of an interprofessional team and play a role in the assessment and care of patients.

Currently enrolled in an approved RN or RPN program


Not required


Performed under licensed RN or RPN supervision:

  • Collect and analyze the patients’ health histories and their psychosocial and physical examination data
  • Help identify the priorities for care and to plan the nursing interventions
  • Implement the care plan and adjust it appropriately as the patients’ needs change
  • Observe patients’ response to the nursing interventions
  • Document any assessments, decisions, observations, and revisions

Make a Difference

  • Provide care to people who are ill or injured
  • Educate patients and families about their condition, treatments, and post-discharge instructions
  • Apply nursing process and use current best practices for patient-focused care
  • Observe and report any changes in patient condition
  • Prepare for a career in nursing

Work Collaboratively

  • Spend time in direct contact with patients and other health-care professionals
  • Work with interprofessional teams, which may include doctors, therapists and other nurses
  • Work at a variety of facilities including hospitals, community clinics and continuing care facilities and follow regular nursing shift schedules, including a combination of day, evening, night, weekend, and holidays
