Approximately a four hours' drive north of Edmonton, the wide prairies dominate the landscape, with the colours and shades of different crops blocking off smaller chunks of land.

High Prairie is located within Alberta’s Big Lakes County. True to the county’s name, this community is close to several lakes for recreation and leisure, including the Hilliard’s Bay Provincial Park area on the northwestern shore of Lesser Slave Lake. Fishing is a popular pastime, with the annual “Golden Walleye Classic” fishing tournament taking place in Lesser Slave Lake.

Families with school age children have Public and Catholic school options for kindergarten through grade twelve. Northern Lakes College has a campus in High Prairie which offers a variety of post-secondary programs including Licensed Practical Nurse, Health Care Aide, and training for various trades.

From drama to dance, cooking classes to cribbage, there are social and cultural clubs for all age groups and interests. There are a range of sports facilities for recreation; including an ice arena, curling rink, ball diamonds, tennis courts, and rec centre with an indoor pool. Horseback riders, including the local 4-H club can use the arena at the Agriplex and equine centre — that is, when it’s not being used for the annual amateur and pro rodeo event.

If you desire to live and work in a family-friendly community with a relaxed lifestyle and easy access to lakeside recreation and outdoor experiences, High Prairie could be just what you’re looking for.

The High Prairie Health Complex opened to the community in the spring of 2017, boasting a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility with 30 acute care beds, and 67 continuing care beds. The complex provides a full range of healthcare services, including 24-hour emergency services, acute care, long-term care, and home care, as well as diagnostic, laboratory, and rehabilitative services.

High Prairie’s friendly “work family,” has a culture of communication, collaboration, and transparency. New grads benefit from the mentorship they receive from their more experienced colleagues as they embark on their healthcare career. Professional development is strongly encouraged, and employees are regularly provided with opportunities to upgrade their skills and stay up-to-date with developments in their field.

Sharing coffees, potlucks, holidays, birthdays, and milestone celebrations, there’s a strong sense of community here. Staff members are also friends outside of work, going fishing or boating together on days off.
