Newly recruited physician now practising in Wainwright

WAINWRIGHT – A newly recruited general practice (GP) physician began practising at Wainwright Health Centre this summer, improving access to care for local and area residents.

With the arrival of Dr. Lizelle Du Plessis, Wainwright has 11 GPs practising in the community.

“Dr. Du Plessis is a very welcome addition to this community,” says Garth Rowswell, MLA for Vermilion-Lloydminster-Wainwright. “I am confident that she will be made very welcome into the community and I hope she will quickly feel at home in this beautiful part of the province.”

Dr. Du Plessis received her medical training at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, where she most recently practised.

“My husband and I decided to emigrate to a country offering multiple opportunities to grow professionally, as a family and personally,” says Dr. Du Plessis. “We are definitely small-town people: we enjoy the peace, the nature and minimal traffic.”

Away from work, Dr. Du Plessis enjoys running and looks forward to exploring Alberta by hiking.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) continues to recruit for physicians across Alberta to meet community needs. AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician recruitment and retention committees.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Our mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans. Our current focus is on reducing emergency department wait-times, improving EMS response times, increasing access to surgeries, and improving patient flow.
