Refocusing healthcare — Attend an in-person engagement
The Government of Alberta is hosting in-person engagement sessions to help shape the future of healthcare in Alberta. These sessions will be an opportunity to engage directly with elected and senior leaders from government, with sessions taking place in more than 40 locations across the province throughout January, February and March.
We encourage staff, physicians and volunteers to register for a local session or a session that works within your schedule. There are several options for dates, times and locations, and future virtual sessions will also be offered if scheduling or travel are a challenge for you.
These voluntary sessions provide a valuable opportunity to share your ideas. Your experiences, input and feedback will help create a more effective healthcare system that is there for Albertans when and where they need it. To sign up or if you have any questions, please visit alberta.ca/shape-the-way.
Health Workforce Strategy highlight — First-year turnover rate
First-year turnover rate represents the percentage of employees who resign or retire within their first year of employment with AHS. The first-year turnover rate for non-casual registered nurses (RNs) is tracked as a supporting measure in the Health Workforce Strategy (HWS).
The rate for non-casual RNs increased from 4.2 per cent last year to 8.0 per cent in Q1 and 7.5 per cent in Q2 of this year.
To reverse this trend, providing robust onboarding for new hires is critical to retaining employees in their first year and supporting them in building meaningful careers with AHS. We know this support can add strain to managers and existing staff, which is why additional provincial resources are being developed through the HWS to support managers and clinical nurse educators with orientating new RNs and integrating internationally educated nurses.
Learn more about steps being taken to support retention through the HWS and Q2 Report.
Prioritize your well-being with specialized depression care and trauma care services offered by our Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP).
EFAP is here to support you and your immediate family members with services that address everyday life events, including depression care for those dealing with severe anxiety and/or depressive symptoms, as well as trauma care for post-traumatic stress or trauma.
This program model uses practices including cognitive behavioural therapy, resiliency training and a wide range of mindfulness tools. EFAP’s clinical team focuses on building resilience to assist you in staying healthy at work and at home.
Contact EFAP at 1-877-273-3134 and a clinician will conduct a screening to see if this is the right fit for you. Physicians can contact the AMA Physician and Family Support Program, a confidential 24/7 support line, at 1-877-767-4637.

Although days are starting to get longer, we’ve had several months of short days. In this Mental Wellness Moment, Dr. Nicholas Mitchell, Provincial Medical Director for Addiction and Mental Health with Alberta Health Services, explains how shorter days can affect one’s mental health and offers some coping tips.
A new workflow is in place for all Connect Care users that limits eligibility for parents or authorized representatives to have proxy access to the MyAHS Connect account of youth aged 12-17.
An informational webinar on the changes was held for Connect Care teams this week.
AHS has recently learned of a security vulnerability affecting Apple products. Apple has released security updates for their affected operating systems and apps, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac computers, Apple TVs and the Safari web browser.
If you use an Apple iPhone, iPad or Mac computer (either AHS-provided or your own personal device), please update to the latest operating system as soon as possible.
If you need assistance updating your AHS-provided Apple device, please contact the IT Service Desk.
You’re invited to a discussion on ethical considerations in hospital evacuations at the Feb. 28 Disaster Rounds online lunch ‘n’ learn.
AHS clinical ethicist Gary Lepine will discuss some of the ethical considerations in hospital evacuations during a disaster, including a decision-making framework, considerations for vulnerable populations, and some personal and professional case studies and context.
Register here for the event, which runs from noon to 1 p.m.
If you would like to be added to the mailing list to receive information about future events, or have recommendations for future topics or speakers, please email ahs.disasterrounds@ahs.ca.
