Critical care to expand at Calgary hospital

Rockyview General Hospital is opening a new intensive care unit (ICU) and coronary care unit (CCU) in April that will increase staffed bed capacity by almost 50 per cent.

Three beds have been added to the ICU and five beds have been added to the CCU. The number of post-procedure recovery bays in the endoscopy unit has increased to 21 bays from 12 bays. By expanding capacity, the new units will ease pressure on emergency resources and ensure faster access to treatment, substantially improving care for critical patients. The expansion also relocates the integrated ICU and CCU into a larger, modernized space to meet the growing demand for critical care services.

The $84-million expansion includes a new procedure room and a 75 per cent increase in post-procedure recovery bays, improving access to essential procedures to diagnose critical conditions.

New continuing care spaces open in Spirit River

Spirit River's first Type B continuing care home (CCH) spaces (formally known as designated supportive living spaces) are now open at Pleasant View Lodge, enabling more community members to receive a higher level of care closer to home.

The new facility includes a total of 52 CCH spaces, as well as 40 lodge spaces. The Grande Spirit Foundation operates Pleasant View Lodge and will manage accommodation services to its residents. AHS is responsible for the care needs of the Type B CCH residents, a level of care previously unavailable in Spirit River. An AHS registered nurse provides home and community care case management for clients in the facility.

This range of care options (Type B, Type B Secure and lodge services) enables individuals to access the most appropriate level of care at one facility as their needs change over time.

New biomedical waste service provider transition begins March 1

Starting March 1, Stericycle ULC will take over biomedical waste management services for AHS, Capital Care, Covenant Health, Carewest, Alberta Precision Laboratories and Recovery Alberta. The transition will be phased in and completed by April 30.

Calgary Zone sites using reusable sharps containers will undergo significant infrastructure changes, including a transition to new container models and disposal processes. Staff will receive guidance to ensure a smooth changeover. Other sites will see minor adjustments, such as variations in the branding, colour, size or labelling of collection containers, pails and cardboard biomedical waste boxes.

The Recycling & Waste Management team will contact sites if action is needed. AHS is working with the new vendor to maintain service schedules where possible.
