Get immunized and report your flu shot

You still have time to get immunized at a Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) walk-in clinic.

Remember that:

  • Influenza immunization is free for all workers.
  • COVID-19 immunization is free for eligible healthcare workers (HCWs) and individuals with underlying medical or immunocompromising conditions. To check if you qualify, visit the Government of Alberta website.

To get immunized:

  • Check the walk-in schedule to find a clinic near you.
  • Bring your employer-issued ID and Alberta Personal Health Number.

All other workers can now get immunized for:

  • Influenza at a pharmacy or a public health clinic (for households with children under five) at no cost. If you receive your flu shot outside of a WHS clinic, please submit a Got My Flu Shot form to support influenza outbreak planning.
  • COVID-19 at public health clinics vaccine for $100 per dose.

New Kickstand funding supports youth mental health

The province is focused on building better futures for children and youth, including through early intervention initiatives. This includes partnering with Kickstand, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to youth mental health and holistic well-being. Supports include in-person Kickstand centres, as well as online through Kickstand Connect.

All Kickstand services are free and confidential, with no wait list or referrals required. Supports are targeted to Albertans aged 11 to 25 and their caregivers. Starting this year, the federal government is committing $10 million over four years to support Kickstand’s efforts to expand services. The province is also investing almost $15 million over three years (2023-26) to support Kickstand. (more...)

A new version of Quanum ECS will be available to all users on Oct. 29. To prepare for this upgrade, a Quanum system downtime has been scheduled from Oct. 28 at 10 p.m. to Oct. 29 at 6 a.m.

During this time, Connect Care users can expect:

  • Connect Care will remain fully operational.

  • Legacy record scanning by your local Health Information Management department will be unavailable. If urgent, paper records may be distributed.

If you require assistance during this time, please contact the IT Service Desk.

Modern tools, better surgical care ahead

Medical device reprocessing (MDR) departments are a vital part of Alberta’s surgical infrastructure, ensuring surgical tools are properly sterilized and available to support safe, timely surgeries. MDR departments are a key reason Alberta achieved 318,920 surgeries last year and continues to outperform the national average for surgical wait times in procedures such as hip replacements, hip fracture repair and knee replacements.

The province dedicated $243 million over three years in Budget 2025 to the Medical Device Reprocessing Upgrade Program to modernize departments across the province. These upgrades will help reduce surgical delays, lower wait times and ensure Albertans receive timely surgeries when they need them. (more...)

Review revised Home Parenteral Systemic Therapy Policy

The Home Parenteral Systemic Therapy Policy has been updated and includes two main practice changes:

  • Removed the listing of specific medications and moved to a separate resource document to allow for easier updating and clinical flexibility (e.g., appropriate infusion durations based on individual medication safety profiles and patient needs).
  • In early 2026, a practice change will occur that allows Blinatumomab to be given over 72 hours, as opposed to the current 24 hours. Please continue to limit Blinatumomab to 24 hours until further notice.

Status renewal required: Healthcare aide regulation coming early 2026

On July 16, the Government of Alberta announced healthcare aides (HCAs) will become a regulated profession effective Feb. 2, 2026. The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) will define the standards HCAs must meet. We will share more information as it becomes available.

In the meantime, please remind HCAs to maintain active HCA Directory status (a condition of employment) and renew by Nov. 30.

Once the regulation takes effect:

  • HCAs will need to meet approved education requirements, standards of practice, ongoing learning, and a professional code of ethics.
  • The CLPNA will become responsible for the regulation of both LPNs and HCAs, under its new name: College of Licensed Practical Nurses and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA).
  • The HCA Directory will become the HCA Registry.
  • HCAs enrolled and active on the directory will be transferred to the registry and issued a CLHA practice permit.

See more information on the CLHA website.
