Site selected for a stand-alone Stollery Children’s Hospital
The new stand-alone Stollery Children’s Hospital will be located on the University of Alberta’s South Campus in Edmonton, at the northeast corner of 122nd Street and 51st Avenue. Alberta is continuing to grow, and this site was chosen for its large size, potential for future expansion and proximity to the university’s existing hospital, supporting stronger collaboration with academic and research partners.
As an undeveloped green space, the location would enable construction to begin without the need to demolish or relocate existing buildings, streamlining the project timeline to deliver on the province’s commitment to build another major hospital in the City of Edmonton. A new stand-alone Stollery Children’s Hospital is vital to Alberta as it will support high-quality pediatric care and address the increasing demand for specialized children’s health services. Dual practice hopes to enhance access
The province is introducing Bill 11, the Health Statutes Amendment Act, 2025 (No. 2), intended to modernize physician participation rules to give doctors flexibility to work in both the public system and private settings. Dual practice would allow physicians to continue providing insured services through the provincial health insurance plan while also delivering private services.
Alberta’s government has looked to proven models in other jurisdictions to guide the development of a model that strengthens access while safeguarding the public system. Dual practice exists in New Brunswick and Quebec, and is widely used in countries with top-performing health systems, including Denmark, the Netherlands, the U.K., France, Germany, Spain and Australia.
If passed, this dual practice model would be closely monitored to protect Alberta’s public healthcare system. The government, for example, would ensure dual practice physicians maintain separate records for the services they provide, so no public funding subsidizes private services. (more...)
