Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP)

Saving for retirement is supported by a defined benefit pension plan through the Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP) in which AHS pays just over half the contributions. You can reasonably rely on how much pension you receive from LAPP because the monthly benefit, payable for life after you retire, is specified by a formula based on your age, pensionable salary and pensionable service. Services are administered by the Alberta Pensions Services Corporation (APS).

Step 3: Eligibility

Mandatory: You are automatically enrolled and start contributing to LAPP if you have a regular position with 30 or more regular work hours scheduled per week.

Optional: You have the option to enrol in LAPP at any time if you have a:

• Regular position with an average of 14 or more regular work hours scheduled per week
• Temporary position with an average of 30 or more regular work hours scheduled per week for a term of six (6) or more months.

Step 4: Enrolment

Mandatory: You are automatically enrolled and start contributing to LAPP. A welcome package from LAPP with forms to complete will be mailed to your home address.

Optional: You need to submit a LAPP Optional Enrolment Form. You will start contributing upon enrolment and payroll setup. Contributions cannot be backdated to your eligibility date if you enrol after you first became eligible. However, you may purchase the service to your enrolment date as an Optional Service.

IMPORTANT:

• Once you have enrolled, you must remain in the pension plan unless you terminate employment, retire or transfer to an ineligible position.
• If you were a member of another pension, you may be eligible to transfer pensionable funds to LAPP.
• Certain transfers have a one-year deadline to apply.
