Valleyview rests on a prairie plateau, between the Little Smoky River and Sturgeon Lake. As noted by its name, the town sits somewhat higher than the surrounding area and overlooks the surrounding valleys. Nearby, you can come to see the forty-mile view and visit the historic cairn commemorating the old district border of Alberta, which, in 1882, was part of the Northwest Territories split into four districts; Alberta, Assiniboia, Athabasca, and Saskatchewan, later becoming the modern provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Today, the Town of Valleyview is located at the junction of highway 43 to Grande Prairie and 49 to Peace River. The two highways flowing from here into northwestern Alberta’s Peace Region have earned the community moniker of “Portal to the Peace.” Valleyview, however, isn’t just a stopover on the way to somewhere else – it’s a great place to live, work, and play.
The rich, fertile soil between the two main bodies of water lend to the area’s thriving and ongoing agricultural base. In addition, forestry and oil and gas resources, hospitality and services, and local businesses and government contribute to a well-rounded local economy, which also has room to grow. People often speak of the local amenities and friendly neighbors providing the best of small-town living, ideal for families.
Valleyview offer’s a terrific lifestyle for residents. The town is surrounded by crown land, rivers and lakes, with plenty of recreational opportunities: hiking, biking, horseback riding, ATVing, snowmobiling, hunting, and fishing. Hundreds of thousands of ducks and geese stop near Valleyview on their annual migration, attracting both sportsmen and birdwatchers. There’s a nearby ski hill that welcomes skiers of all levels throughout the winter months. Williamson and Young’s Point provincial parks are a major attraction to the region, including migrating birds. Explore and appreciate the natural world right in your backyard!
The town itself has a traditional layout with a walkable downtown core. There’s an excellent variety of community activities, with a full calendar of special events, programs, and activities throughout the year for adults, children, and youth. True to its rural roots, the annual Crocus Hill Stampede and agricultural fair is a don’t miss event. There’s a summer fair, fall festival, and annual school supplies drive for the less fortunate. The Red Willow Players is the active community theatre organization, Valleyview House Concerts organize shows across many musical genres, and the local curling club is just one of the numerous sports clubs to get involved in, which also includes hockey and soccer. Local facilities include the Greenview Regional Multiplex with a gym, fieldhouse, indoor pool, and hockey rinks, and the Polar Palace, the local rink.
