Provost is a family-friendly and peaceful community amid colourful blocks of crops and small stands of trees, at the edge of Alberta’s “Lake Country” close to the Saskatchewan border. Once called “Lakeview” for the small lake on the southwestern corner of town, Provost stays close to its agricultural history, which was also shaped by its role as a westward stop along the Canadian railroad. Provost’s warm welcome, small-town charm, old-fashioned country hospitality, and friendly faces appeal to residents and tourists alike.
Laid-back and down-to-earth, Provost residents stay active and social in a variety of ways. With a range of recreational facilities, amateur sports, social groups, and a full calendar of community events, there’s always something to do. Local facilities include a recreation centre, swimming pool, bowling alley, ball diamonds, tennis courts, and of course, a curling rink and hockey arena. The town hosts many sporting events, including hockey and baseball tournaments, curling bonspiels, and an annual fund raiser in support of the local figure skating club.
Provost has all the essential shops, services, and amenities, including health care and schools covering kindergarten through grade twelve. There are charming cafes, and some family-owned businesses that date back over a century! Provost Packers and Boumas Meats are renowned for their excellent cuts of meat, sausages, and jerky, and there’s a three-kilometre paved walking trail to enjoy in all seasons.
Spring and summer include the Provost Music Festival, community Barbeque, drag races at the local air strip, and the Father’s Day “Splash and Smash” featuring mud bogging and a demolition derby. There's the fall pumpkin festival and annual Fireman’s Ball, with country-style Christmas celebrations in December.
Provost’s location at the edge of Lake Country means that there are plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors, with dozens of lakes within a day trip distance to enjoy swimming, paddling, boating, or just hanging out lakeside on one of over 200 beaches. Ribstone Creek, Capt Ayre Lake, Dilberry Lake, and Shornliff Lake are just a few popular spots nearby.
You can camp in a Tipi at the Bodo Archeological site, and even join an excavation to experience archeology first-hand. You can see some of the interesting finds on display: bone fragments, arrowheads, pottery shards, and stone tools dating back thousands of years!
