In Hinton, you won’t have to go far to see world-class views that rival the famous parks. Nestled in the foothills, the town of Hinton is at the edge of the Rocky Mountains and a short trip from beautiful Jasper, Alberta.

Hinton is laid out along the south bank of the Athabasca River, within the broad Alberta Plateau Benchlands that flank the Alberta Rocky Mountains. Named for the manager of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in the early 1900’s, Hinton grew with the discovery of coal deposits in the 30’s, and Alberta’s first pulp mill in 1957.

Today, Hinton is a thriving town of over 10,000 residents who make a life in this resource-rich and beautiful area at the feet of the Rockies. The natural world at Hinton’s doorstep lends itself to an outstanding quality of life. The myriad of outdoor recreational opportunities and excellent recreational and cultural experiences can help you create your ideal lifestyle. Hinton is a pet-friendly community, with off-leash areas, veterinarians, pet stores, groomers, and doggie day cares to ensure your furry friend is healthy and happy whenever you’re not off exploring trails together.

William Switzer Provincial Park, Rock Lake Provincial Park, Kinkey Lake, and Windhay Glacial Cascades are just a few of the natural areas for camping and exploration. Slow down and soak it all in as you paddle a canoe or kayak or take in expansive views from the back of a horse at Entrance Ranch. If you’re curious about the region’s rich history, hear stories and examine artifacts at the Northern Rockies Museum of History and Culture.

The numerous parks and outdoor spaces include 14 nature preserves, and 143 campsites among the trees, flanking the river, or bordering tranquil lakes, plus over a dozen parks and playgrounds in town. Hinton is well known for its Nordic Centre, which features over 35 kilometers of groomed trails for cross-country skiing and includes a biathlon range. In addition, the Hinton Bike Park has 37 acres of land dotted with wooden, rock, and natural obstacles for mountain bikers of all skill levels.

Hinton’s local shops and services allow for not only necessities, but dining, clothing, auto, home and garden, appliances and electronics, hair and nail salons. Throughout the year, Hinton has a full calendar of events. From music festivals to cultural celebrations, hockey tournaments and seasonal delights, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re single, have a growing family, or an empty nester starting your next chapter, Hinton has something for you!
