The forest community of Edson lies in the rolling woodland of the McLeod River valley, immediately east of the Canadian Rockies foothills. The surrounding landscape includes taiga forest, sand hills, and muskeg, with two provincial parks, Sundance Provincial Park along Sundance Creek, and Obed Lake Provincial Park, which surrounds the three Obed lakes.

The Edson Bike Skills park is among the largest of its kind in Alberta and features a variety of natural and man-made features for all levels of cyclist: jumps, rocks, logs, pump tracks, ladder bridges, teeter totters, and a flow trail.
You don’t have to go far to enjoy nature in a variety of ways: hiking, cross-country skiing, ATVing, snowmobiling, horseback riding, canoeing, and kayaking can be found nearby at over 10 campsites and recreational areas. The popular Willmore Park has an extensive multi-use trail system, day use and group areas, and scenic views. Don’t miss the tobogganing hill in winter!

Local recreational facilities include indoor and outdoor venues, and a local museum to discover the area’s rich history. Edson got its current name in 1911 to honour the Vice President of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway as it made its way westward. Today, the Galloway Station and Travel Centre preserves and houses artifacts from throughout the history of Edson and the surrounding area. Be sure to visit the statue of town mascot “Eddie the Squirrel,” in the adjoining Centennial Park.
The Edson and District Leisure Centre has twin arenas, an indoor swimming pool, a concession, and a hospitality room. The Red Brick Arts Centre is the restored and renovated former Edson School Building, which dates back to 1913, and is a registered Municipal Historic Resource. The Red Brick Arts Centre is home to arts and cultural events throughout the year, including theatre, dance, music, and visual arts programs, classes, and performances.

The Edson Healthcare Centre provides a full range of healthcare services, including a 24/7 emergency department. Opened in 2018, this nearly $200 million facility can follow a patient’s journey from diagnosis through active treatment and recovery. Diagnostic services include laboratory, ultrasound, and x-ray. The hospital features surgical suites, obstetrics suites, a pharmacy, a 24-bed acute care wing, 76-bed continuing care facility, dialysis treatment and more. Rehabilitative services include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and audiology, with Indigenous supports through the Indigenous Wellness Core.
Residents can access public health information and education programs at the Edson Healthcare Centre. This includes programs for pregnancy, postpartum and early childhood, and immunization services for infants, children, adults, and travel immunization. Edson home care is based out of the Edson Health Centre. Additional supports can also be accessed through the Edson and Area Healthy Living Program.
Edson residents can also find adult and youth addiction and mental health services at this facility through Recovery Alberta. Residents can also access counseling at the Edson Provincial Building.
The Edson Continuing Care Centre provides continuing care services and respite care, as well as continuing care provided at home. It also has a secure space for Alzheimer's patients.
