What We Do

The program will ensure high-quality, evidence-based care through clinical standards and oversee quality assurance and system innovation.

TCA will also monitor demand and capacity across service delivery providers to help meet wait time targets and support and sustain trauma care system operations and integration.

Trauma Registry

A comprehensive trauma registry is a requirement of the Trauma Association of Canada guidelines for all trauma centres. Since January 1, 2015, all 10 Alberta trauma centres have contributed to the web-based Alberta Trauma Registry.

Eligibility Criteria

A trauma case is included in the Alberta Trauma Registry if it:

  • Has an ICD external cause of injury code that meets the definition of trauma.
  • Has an Injury Severity Score (ISS) of 12 or greater, or meets the penetrating trauma criteria requiring surgical/operating room resources.
  • Meets one of the following:
    • Is admitted to a participating hospital; or
    • Dies in the emergency department of a participating hospital after treatment has been initiated.

The Injury Severity Score (ISS) is an anatomical scoring system used to measure the severity of a patient's injuries. Higher ISS values indicate more severe injuries.

Data Collection

To ensure all eligible patients are included, trauma centres review injury admissions, discharges, and emergency department resuscitations daily. Patients are identified through discharge diagnoses and screened for inclusion.

Under Section 27(1)(g) of the Health Information Act, Trauma Services is authorized to collect registry data. Up to 500 data elements are collected for each patient through chart abstraction.

How the Registry Supports Trauma Care

The Alberta Trauma Registry is used to measure and improve the performance of Alberta's trauma system. Registry data supports:

  • Performance Measurement & Reporting
  • Quality & Patient Safety Improvement
  • Research
  • Resource Planning & Utilization
  • Education
  • Injury Prevention Initiatives
  • Patient Outcome Evaluation
