Safe Sleep for Babies

Injury Prevention & Safety

Safe sleep environments can reduce the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) and prevent other sleep-related injuries and deaths such as suffocation, asphyxia and smothering.

Alberta Health Services has developed a safe sleep policy for infants up to one year old. The AHS Safe Infant Sleep Policy provides direction that ensures consistent safe sleep practices are in place across AHS in all care settings.

Key Messages

The key messages in the AHS Safe Infant Sleep Policy align with recommendations from the Canadian Paediatric Society, Health Canada, and the American Academy of Pediatrics on safe infant sleep environments.
