Residents invited to learn about, play sledge hockey

Six more sessions scheduled this winter, no experience necessary

LETHBRIDGE – People of all ages interested in sledge hockey are reminded there are six more opportunities this winter to learn about the sport and play the game.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has partnered with the Lethbridge Sledge Hockey Association and Coaldale Recreation Hockey to organize practice-and-play sessions, held every second Tuesday between 6:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Ice Centre, 401 Laval Blvd. W. The next session is Jan. 19.

Each session costs $20. Sessions are open to both able-bodied people and individuals with disabilities. No experience playing sledge hockey is necessary.

Sledge hockey players sit in a specially designed sled which glides on two regular-sized hockey skate blades that allow the puck to pass underneath. Players use two sticks which have metal picks on the end that are used to propel the players on the ice.

During each 75-minute session, participants are led through a warm-up and some skill development drills before a scrimmage game. A therapy assistant ensures all newcomers feel welcome, finds participants a properly sized sled, assists them with getting in and out of the sled, and provides a basic introduction to the game. Participants must supply their own helmet.

The goal is to support participants in achieving their goals, whether it be to improve specific hockey skills, improve functional independence, improve upper body strength and mobility, or just get out, meet people and have fun.

Anyone interested in playing can register via email: sledgehockeylethbridge@gmail.com, or visit the Lethbridge Sledge Hockey Club Facebook page.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta.
