Residents invited to information session about dementia

GRANDE PRAIRIE – Local and area residents are invited to a free information session called Understanding Dementia to help raise awareness about dementia and what supports are available to them.

Dementia is a syndrome that affects memory, thinking, orientation, judgment and ability to carry out daily activities. By 2038, one in 10 Albertans over the age of 65 and nearly half over age 90 are expected to have a form of dementia.

The information session is hosted by Alberta Health Services-Seniors Health.

Topics will include:

• General information about dementia.
• Behaviors related to dementia.
• Appropriate use of antipsychotic medication.
• Alternative approaches for behaviors.
• Available family resources.

The session will be held April 5 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital Auditorium.

Registration is not required but is encouraged. Interested individuals can call Christine Bowering at 780-513-8158 to register before March 29.
