AHS Therapeutic Recreation and Lethbridge Bookmobile bringing fitness equipment to the community

April 25, 2016

Walking poles, pedometers and more can be borrowed with a library card

LETHBRIDGE – This spring, Lethbridge residents can bring their library card to the Bookmobile to borrow fitness equipment and learn how to improve their fitness as part of a new Mobile Movers program, presented by Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the Lethbridge Public Library (LPL).

At the Bookmobile, program participants will receive information on how to achieve their fitness goals and how to self-manage their chronic conditions. They can borrow fitness equipment, including pedometers and walking poles, and outdoor games, including horseshoe sets, Frisbee golf sets, volleyballs, footballs and pickle ball sets.

These resources will be available Mondays starting May 2 through July from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Bookmobile’s SunRidge location (Mount Sundance Manor West).

The program, slated to run until July, is staffed by AHS recreation therapists and staff from the LPL’s Physical Literacy Program, which offers kits containing everything needed for a number of different outdoor sports and activities. The kits can also be picked up at both branches of the city library.

Recreation therapists work with people who have illnesses and disabling conditions to improve their health and quality of life through leisure and recreation. Weather permitting, therapeutic recreation staff will motivate Mobile Mover participants to achieve their fitness goals in their neighbourhood.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
