AHS raises awareness of e-cigarette health effects on World No Tobacco Day

May 31, 2016

NORTH ZONE— Alberta Health Services’ (AHS) Tobacco Reduction Program is raising awareness about the health risks associated with the use of electronic smoking products during World No Tobacco Day (WNTD), observed annually on May 31.

Incorrectly perceived as safe and risk-free by many, e-cigarettes actually haven’t been tested or fully evaluated for safety and quality. There are no standards or labelling requirements for e-cigarettes, which makes it hard to know exactly what is in the liquid. Because chemicals in the cartridges can vary, it’s hard to know what e-cigarette users and people nearby are breathing in. They may also cause nicotine poisoning and lead to a nicotine addiction.

In an effort to clear the vapour and protect youth and teens from using such products, theTobacco Reduction Program will provide parents, teachers and health professionals with access to new resources to support discussions with students and youth about the health risks surrounding the use of electronic smoking products.

In addition, AHS staff will be sharing their messages with Albertans across the province during WNTD, hosting a number of activities with community partners.

AHS staff have set up informational displays at the following sites:

  • Grimshaw Municipal Library
  • Falher Library
  • Berwyn Municipal Library
  • Nampa Municipal Library
  • McLennan Municipal Library
  • Fairview Municipal Library
  • Manning Value Drug Mart
  • Peace River Municipal Library
  • Peace River Associate Medical Clinic
  • Peace River Community Health Centre
  • Peace River Provincial Building

AHS tobacco information and resources are also available at health clinics, pharmacies and dental offices in many communities in the area.

Established by the World Health Organization (WHO), World No Tobacco Day has been an annual observance on May 31 for more than 20 years. It aims to highlight the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocate for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.

AHS offers a variety of programs and services to help Albertans quit all forms of tobacco (including electronic), by telephone, group cessation programs and one-on-one counseling. Online supports and resources are also available from www.albertaquits.ca to help Albertans double their chances of quitting. All supports are free of charge and available to all Albertans.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
