Project Connect supports local residents in need

October 16, 2017

MEDICINE HAT – Local residents in need can access support from community services and receive a free hot meal and haircut Wednesday, at the annual Project Connect resource fair.

Project Connect is free and will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday October 18 at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 504 2 St. S.E. It is presented by community-service agencies and supported by Alberta Health Services (AHS). The focus is to support individuals in the city who are living in poverty, by connecting them to supports and services that will increase their overall wellbeing.

AHS staff will provide free blood and urine screening for sexually transmitted infections and hepatitis C; influenza immunization; dental screening; sexual health information; and details about mental health and addiction programs. It’s not all serious business – some laughter-yoga sessions are also planned, to lighten the mood and help relieve stress.

Project Connect will shift from a one-day event to two or more events this year that are specialized in their delivery. Using THRIVE Medicine Hat & Area Strategy as a guide to end poverty and increase wellbeing, Project Connect offers workshops, services and supports that help individuals learn new skills, obtain support and connect with organizations in meaningful ways.

The event is made possible through the combined efforts of AHS; St. John’s Presbyterian Church; Medicine Hat Community Housing Society; Canadian Red Cross Society; the City of Medicine Hat; Salvation Army, HIV Community Link, Inclusion Medicine Hat, McMan, YMCA, Canadian Mental Health Association and many others.

MEDIA PLEASE NOTE: In order to protect the privacy of attendees, reporters and photographers are not invited to cover the actual event. We would be grateful, however, if media would promote Project Connect ahead of time to help us draw as many people as possible who could benefit from these free services. Thank you.
