Dr. John Conly was named a member to the Order of Canada.
A physician who created national guidelines on the standard of care for infectious diseases is one of six people associated with Alberta Health Services who were among 105 new appointments to the Order of Canada.
Dr. John Conly, who specializes in internal medicine and infectious diseases, was named a member to the Order of Canada “for his ongoing dedication to antimicrobial resistance and infection control in Canada,” according to a news release from the Office of the Governor General of Canada. Dr. Conly is also a professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary.
Also recognized were philanthropists who have contributed significantly to healthcare in the province:
- Dianne and Irving Kipnes of Edmonton were named members to the Order of Canada “for their commitment to community building and for their philanthropic leadership in the arts and healthcare.” They established the Dianne and Irving Kipnes Centre for Veterans in 2005, and have supported the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute and the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Irving led the Campaign for Prostate Health after his own battle with cancer, funding the C.J. Woods Prostate Health Clinic. The pair has also endowed a research chair at the Cross Cancer Institute.
- Frances Olson of Edmonton was named a member to the Order of Canada “for her extensive community engagement, notably with the University Hospital Foundation, which has enriched the vitality of her city.” A chair of the foundation from 1984 to 1990, she continues with fundraising for the hospital’s Brain Centre Campaign.
- Gerald Wood of Calgary was named a member to the Order of Canada “for his contributions to his city and province as an entrepreneur and philanthropist.” He has supported the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
- Patricia Meirion Moore of Calgary was named an Officer of the Order of Canada “for her lifelong involvement in her community as a dedicated and hands-on volunteer, and for her fundraising and philanthropic efforts to strengthen her community’s cultural and social fabric.” She has supported the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation.
The Order of Canada is one of Canada’s highest civilian honours, recognizing outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
Members to the Order of Canada recognize contributions at the local or regional level, or in a special field of activity. Officers recognize national service or achievement.
Recipients will be invited to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a later date.
