New day program for youth launched in the North Zone

GRANDE PRAIRIE – A new day program for youth has been launched for the residents of Grande Prairie and the surrounding area.

The Youth Day Program (YDP) is a voluntary, eight-week outpatient program for youth Grades 7-12 who have been experiencing serious problems in different areas of their life because of substance use and/or mental health issues.

“I’m really pleased that this program is now available for families in the area,” says Dr. Sandra Corbett, North Zone Medical Director. “I think it could make a significant difference in the lives of the youth and their families who take part, with its comprehensive, evidence-based approach to living well and making good choices.”

Located in Grande Prairie, the aim of the YDP is to provide a supportive and encouraging environment for youth and their families as the youth work through the challenges in their lives.

The program includes group counselling, individual therapy, skills workshops, education, therapeutic recreation, family therapy, support group and psycho-educational workshops.

“If we can help set these youth up to have healthy, happy lives, that’s a win for everyone,” says Stacy Greening, Senior Operating Officer, Addiction and Mental Health, North Zone. “It’s great that we can now offer this supportive program to youth and their families close to home. Previously they would have to leave the area to access similar programs.”

Youth participating in the program will continue their education through the support of both online and in-class schooling, with an educational assistant provided by the Grande Prairie Public School District, Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools, and Peace Wapiti School Division.

For families, the YDP includes family therapy, family support group, case management and transition meetings.

Youth can be referred from many sources including schools, physicians and therapists. Self-referrals are also accepted. For more information, call 780-538-5162.
