Wetaskiwin supportive living facility opens for seniors

WETASKIWIN – A new designated supportive living facility has opened in Wetaskiwin for local and area seniors with complex care needs.

Located in the city’s northeast, Points West Living (PWL) Wetaskiwin offers 82 supportive-living spaces, including 53 spaces specifically for seniors with dementia, where residents can get support for their health and personal needs in a home-like environment.

“I’m so pleased this fantastic new facility will provide seniors with a new home and a range of health and care services that will meet their needs and keep them safe and healthy in their community,” says Tyler Shandro, Minister of Health. “Congratulations to all the partners on the grand opening of this new Wetaskiwin facility. We’re committed to supporting Alberta seniors and families, including the growing population of people with dementia, and we’re backing that commitment with $184 million over the next four years to upgrade and open new continuing care facilities across the province.”

PWL Wetaskiwin is owned by Points West Living Wetaskiwin Inc. and operated by Connecting Care Inc., with Alberta Health Services (AHS) providing operational funding for all 82 supportive living spaces.

Supportive living promotes residents’ independence and aging in place through the provision of services such as 24-hour monitoring, emergency response, security, meals, housekeeping and social-enrichment activities.

On-site licensed practical nurses and healthcare aides support residents requiring assistance with daily living, including personal care and recreational programs.

“As Alberta’s population continues to increase and age, so does the demand for continuing care,” says Janice Stewart, Chief Zone Officer for AHS Central Zone. “These new supportive living spaces will help meet the current and future needs of the community. AHS is committed to enhancing care in the community and this expansion of continuing care capacity in Wetaskiwin reflects our commitment.”

There are now 304 supportive living spaces in the city.

The Government of Alberta provided $3.65 million through the Affordable Supportive Living Initiative (ASLI) toward construction of PWL Wetaskiwin.

“Our care and service team is excited to be providing quality service to the Wetaskiwin community and we are grateful for the great partnership with AHS who shares our commitment to “building resident-centered communities”,” says Linda Revell, CEO, PWL and Connecting Care. “For those needing our support, we look forward to making Points West Living their homes. Welcome home!”
