Temporary COVID-19 testing site closing in Wetaskiwin

June 17, 2021

Testing remains available in other locations for residents

WETASKIWIN— Due to a decrease in demand for COVID-19 testing at the testing site in Wetaskiwin, Alberta Health Services (AHS) will be closing the temporary site effective June 25, 2021.

Permanent testing sites remain in Red Deer, Camrose, and Drayton Valley. Public Health continues to offer testing, and home-based testing remains available for exceptional circumstances where clients are unable to travel to one of the testing sites.

The Wetaskiwin testing site was opened in October 2020 as a temporary measure in response to increased COVID-19 activity within central Alberta, as well as increased demand for access to testing.  Since that time, utilization rates of the testing site have dropped significantly, and the rate of active COVID-19 cases in the area has decreased to below 50 per 100,000 people.

Public Health staff who have been supporting the temporary testing site will continue to support the pandemic response, including vaccination.

Individuals with symptoms of COVID-19 are advised to self-isolate immediately, and go online to book a testing appointment at ahs.ca/covid. People without Internet access can call 811 and HealthLink staff will book a test appointment.

COVID-19 vaccination continues across the province, open to all Albertans aged 12 and older. Appointments can be booked for first and second doses, and limited no appointment, COVID-19 immunization clinics are available for first dose Moderna vaccine. Booking and walk-in info can be found at online at ahs.ca/vaccine. Participating pharmacies are also offering first and second doses by appointment.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
