Operation of two Lloydminster facilities officially transferred to AHS

December 20, 2021

LLOYDMINSTER— Effective December 20, 2021, Alberta Health Services (AHS) will officially assume operation of the Dr. Cooke Extended Care Centre, and the Lloydminster Continuing Care Centre from the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA).

Both facilities are already owned by AHS, and have been following the Alberta Continuing Care Health Service Standards and the authority of Alberta Health.

Since June 2021 the two provincial health authorities have been working toward the transition following mutual agreement to cancel a long-standing contract for the operating of continuing care services at both facilities.

Transitioning service delivery and oversight to AHS will align the facilities with other continuing care services within the Central Zone, which is expected to support the residents who call the Dr. Cooke Extended Care Centre and Lloydminster Continuing Care Centre home.

Over the past six months, AHS and SHA have been working with staff, physicians, residents and families to ensure a smooth transition. Staff have been provided with guidance and support in moving over to AHS computer systems and completing AHS’ orientation programs.

There has been no disruption to care for residents during the transition.

The delivery of continuing care in Lloydminster is part of the Lloydminster Bi-Provincial Health Services Agreement between AHS and SHA, which has been in place since 2014. Continued collaboration between SHA and AHS will continue under this agreement regarding operations of other healthcare services in the Border City.

Together, AHS and SHA extend their gratitude to staff for their efforts and support throughout the transition. The commitment to continuing to care for residents and one another is commendable.
