MAYERTHORPE — Local and area families have improved access to care with the arrival of a new physician now practising in the community.

Dr. Bank-Anthony Uche Ekwem is a family medicine physician who will be providing care at Family Practice Associates and Mayerthorpe Healthcare Centre.

He joins a team of four family medicine physicians providing services in Mayerthorpe.

“I am very happy to welcome Dr. Uche Ekwem into our community as his services are greatly needed in our area, and will be appreciated for years to come,” says Shane Getson, MLA for Lac Ste. Anne-Parkland. “Medical professionals are cherished in rural Alberta, and the Mayerthorpe region is no different. I am sure that the folks in our area will demonstrate to the doctor what it is like to be welcomed with open arms, to be made to feel right at home, and to be part of a community from day one.”

Alberta Health Services (AHS) continues to recruit physicians for northern Alberta to meet community needs.

AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician attraction and retention committees.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
