AHS promotes hydration and safe sun practices during Calgary Stampede

July 13, 2022

CALGARY – Alberta Health Services reminds residents and visitors heading out to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Calgary Stampede to keep safe health practices top of mind.

Seek shade and stay hydrated.

With hot temperatures forecasted this week, there is an increased risk of heat-related illness such as heat exhaustion or sunstroke, as well as sunburns and other sun-related injuries.

To avoid heat-related illness:

Good sun safety is also important:

If you feel dizzy, nauseous and faint, you may be suffering from heat exhaustion. Drink plenty of water and get into a shaded area. Keep in mind that children, older adults and those with pre-existing medical conditions are particularly vulnerable to heat exhaustion and dehydration.

Hot weather can also cause heat stroke. Symptoms include high body temperature, lack of sweat, disorientation, fainting, and unconsciousness. Move the person to a shaded area, remove their outer clothing and shoes, wrap them in a wet towel, and get medical attention as soon as possible.

For serious emergencies, call 911 or visit your nearest emergency department.
