CANMORE – Planning and design work has started on a $4.4-million revitalization project for the Canmore General Hospital’s emergency department.
The project — jointly funded by the Government of Alberta, Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the Canmore & Area Health Care Foundation — will improve patient flow, create private patient treatment spaces and meet current infection, prevention and control standards.

Construction will be done in phases and is expected to be complete in 2024. More detailed construction timelines will be shared with the community once they’ve been finalized.

As part of the project, an existing waiting room and an eye clinic will be moved out of the emergency department to create new space.
About 14,500 people visit the Canmore emergency department annually.

Edmonton-based ACI Architects has been chosen as the prime consultants and architects for the Canmore emergency department project.
AHS, in partnership with Alberta Infrastructure and Alberta Health, is building and renewing facilities across the province to provide accessible, sustainable, quality healthcare to all Albertans. AHS currently has about 540 maintenance projects underway throughout the province.
The Canmore and Area Health Care Foundation is a registered charity, separate from the Canmore General Hospital. Funds raised by the foundation through the generosity of our donors does not replace base funding through Alberta Health Services but enhance the patient care provided by the hospital through equipment purchases, programs, staff education and improvement of facilities.
