Design begins on $4.4M Canmore General Hospital emergency department upgrades

November 28, 2022

CANMORE – Planning and design work has started on a $4.4-million revitalization project for the Canmore General Hospital’s emergency department.

The project — jointly funded by the Government of Alberta, Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the Canmore & Area Health Care Foundation — will improve patient flow, create private patient treatment spaces and meet current infection, prevention and control standards.

The foundation has launched a Canmore emergency department revitalization campaign with the goal of raising $2.2 million for the project. To donate or for more information, visit canmorehealthfoundation.com.

“This is a great example of how communities and health foundations often work in close partnership with AHS and the Government of Alberta to make this province a great place to live and raise a family,” says Jason Copping, Minister of Health. “I thank the foundation and its donors for their commitment and generosity in supporting healthcare delivery for Canmore.”

Construction will be done in phases and is expected to be complete in 2024. More detailed construction timelines will be shared with the community once they’ve been finalized.

The upgraded emergency department will include:

As part of the project, an existing waiting room and an eye clinic will be moved out of the emergency department to create new space.

About 14,500 people visit the Canmore emergency department annually.

“The Canmore General Hospital plays an important role in the well-being of this community,” says Mauro Chies, Interim AHS President and CEO. "It is vital we keep our healthcare infrastructure current, and projects like this ensure our patients receive quality care in the best environments."

Steven Scott, Canmore & Area Health Care Foundation's Board of Trustees Chair, says projects like these help the Canmore General Hospital remain a first-class healthcare facility.

“I’m extremely proud of what the foundation has already accomplished, including the recently completed $1.5-million renovation of Golden Eagle View long-term care centre,” Scott says. “This and other capital projects have been made possible by our wonderful, visionary donors who have worked with us to meet the growing needs of our hospital and community.”

Edmonton-based ACI Architects has been chosen as the prime consultants and architects for the Canmore emergency department project.

AHS, in partnership with Alberta Infrastructure and Alberta Health, is building and renewing facilities across the province to provide accessible, sustainable, quality healthcare to all Albertans. AHS currently has about 540 maintenance projects underway throughout the province.

The Canmore and Area Health Care Foundation is a registered charity, separate from the Canmore General Hospital. Funds raised by the foundation through the generosity of our donors does not replace base funding through Alberta Health Services but enhance the patient care provided by the hospital through equipment purchases, programs, staff education and improvement of facilities.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
