GRANDE PRAIRIE – Local residents have increased access to primary care with the arrival of a new pediatrician now practising in the community.
Dr. Priscilla Afari is the seventh pediatrician in the community and fifth working out of Grande Prairie Regional Hospital.
“There are many young families that call the Peace Country their home, and the arrival of a new pediatrician will play in vital role in the well-being of local children and youth,” says Tracy Allard, MLA for Grande Prairie. “Her addition as a pediatrician is wonderful news for our community. We are all so pleased she has chosen to practise here and make a difference in the lives of Grande Prairie residents.”
Dr. Afari received her medical training at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana, and completed her residency at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Ghana.
She, her husband and their three daughters enjoy an active lifestyle and are learning more about the community since arriving here in December.
“I am happy to settle in Grande Prairie with family because the city, like Goldilocks’ story, is not too big, and not too small, but it is just right!” she says. “I am thankful for the opportunity to be involved in your care. Together with you and your child, we can figure out what health looks like for each one.”
Alberta Health Services (AHS) continues to recruit for physicians across northern Alberta to meet community needs. AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician recruitment and retention committees.
Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Our mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans. Our current focus is on reducing emergency department wait-times, improving EMS response times, increasing access to surgeries, and improving patient flow.
