BARRHEAD - Local and area residents now have improved access to primary care with the recruitment of another family physician for the community.
Dr. Nimota Bakare is a family medicine physician who is now practising at the Barrhead Healthcare Centre. She will also open a family medicine practice here next month once renovations have been completed at her clinic space at Barrhead Medical Centre. Dr. Bakare joins a team of 12 other family medicine physicians and two specialists in the community.
“Alberta Health Services (AHS) is taking action focused on improving patient flow and providing more care options to Albertans,” says Jason Copping, Minster of Health. “It’s about getting the right care to Albertans where and when they need it, and this new Pediatric Rehabilitation Line does just that.”
“I want to extend a warm welcome to Dr. Bakare,” says Glenn van Dijken, MLA for Athabasca-Barrhead-Westlock. “We are committed to ensuring accessible and quality healthcare for all Albertans, and her arrival strengthens the local medical team and will make a difference in the lives of those who rely on our local healthcare services.”
Dr. Firdaus Mydeen, Associate Zone Medical Director for Alberta Health Services (AHS), says Dr. Bakare is a great addition to the local care team. “Her skill and expertise will help increase access to healthcare for residents and help support our local medical team,” says Dr. Mydeen.
Originally from Nigeria, Dr. Bakare completed her medical training at St. George’s University in Grenada, with post-graduate studies completed in South Africa.
A family physician with a passion for psychiatry and women’s health, Dr. Bakare says she enjoys learning new things. She and her husband have three sons ages 6, 4 and 2 who love any activity that keeps them on the move. “I’m looking forward to being part of the community and creating positive impact,” she says.
AHS continues to recruit for physicians across northern Alberta to meet community needs. AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician attraction and retention committees.
