Construction Begins on Canmore Emergency Department

July 6, 2023

CANMORE - With the swing of a hammer at a ceremony today, Canmore resident and major donor Lorne Heuckroth officially marked the start of construction on the Canmore Emergency Department (ED) project and acknowledged the generous contribution of all donors.

“I am excited to see work begin on this important project for our community,” said Lorne Heuckroth, a major donor on the Canmore & Area Health Care Foundation (CAHCF) campaign that raised $2.2 million dollars towards the project. “Every community deserves access to exceptional healthcare, especially during emergencies. The renovation of our local emergency room is a testament to our collective dedication towards building a safer and healthier future for all residents.”

The ED project, which has a total cost of $4.4 million, jointly funded by the Government of Alberta, Alberta Health Services (AHS), and CAHCF, will improve patient flow, create private patient treatment spaces and enhance infection, prevention and control standards.

“This renovation project will create a nurturing environment where healthcare professionals can deliver life-saving treatments with efficiency and compassion,” said Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Health. “It is our collective vision to ensure that everyone who walks through those the doors receives the highest standard of care.”

Prime Consultant, ACI Architecture Inc, have completed the design work for the project. Demolition work to accommodate the project is now underway. Shunda Construction Management will be overseeing the project, which is expected to be completed in late 2024.

“This ED renovation represents a transformative step forward, ensuring that our community has a resilient and modern healthcare infrastructure capable of providing exceptional emergency care for years to come,” says Mauro Chies, AHS President and CEO.

The Canmore and Area Health Care Foundation is a registered charity, separate from the Canmore General Hospital. Funds raised by the foundation through the generosity of our donors does not replace base funding through Alberta Health Services but enhance the patient care provided by the hospital through equipment purchases, programs, staff education and improvement of facilities.
