WHITECOURT — Local and area residents now have improved access to primary care with the recruitment of two family medicine physicians for the community.

Dr. Eghonghon Osagie and Dr. Olumayowa Mustapha are family medicine physicians who are now practising at the Whitecourt Healthcare Centre and Associate Medical Clinic. Dr. Osagie and Dr. Mustapha join a team of 14 other physicians providing service in the community.

“I’m pleased Dr. Osagie and Dr. Mustapha have chosen a rural community in northern Alberta to practise family medicine,” says Martin Long, MLA for West Yellowhead. “They are both certainly a welcome addition to the local medical team and will help increase our residents’ access to primary care.”

Originally from Nigeria where she completed her medical training, Dr. Osagie comes to Whitecourt from Calgary. Dr. Mustapha is also originally from Nigeria where he completed his undergraduate training before doing his post-graduate training in South Africa.

“It’s a pleasure to welcome Dr. Osagie and Dr. Mustapha to Whitecourt,” says Dr. Jane Ojedokun, Associate Zone Medical Director for Alberta Health Services (AHS). “The recruitment of additional family physicians will help increase our residents access to local healthcare and help support our current physicians.”

With a focus on family medicine, Dr. Osagie has a young, active family that enjoys hiking and swimming. “I look forward to a community that is welcoming and pleasant; a community I can call home,” she says.

Dr. Mustapha, his wife and young daughter also enjoy spending time outdoors. He says he is looking forward to “doing my best towards making Whitecourt a healthy community.”

AHS continues to recruit for physicians across northern Alberta to meet community needs. AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician attraction and retention committees.
