RED DEER — Local and area residents now have improved access to surgical services with the arrival of a newly recruited anesthesiologist.

Dr. Jaco Janse van Rensburg is now practising out of the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre. He spent several years doing post-graduate anesthesia specialist training in South Africa and Ireland. In 2015, he completed his fellowship in anesthesia at the College of Medicine of South Africa and a Master of Medicine in Anesthesia at the University of Cape Town.

“The recruitment of Dr. Janse van Rensburg will improve access to surgical services for patients in Red Deer and across central Alberta. This is great news for our growing city and surrounding areas,” says Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Health and MLA for Red Deer-North. “Our government continues to work with our partners to recruit physicians to communities across the province, improving access to healthcare services for all Albertans.”

“Red Deer is the third largest city in the best province in Canada,” adds Jason Stephan, MLA for Red Deer-South. “Centrally located in the dynamic Calgary-Edmonton corridor, on the Red Deer River with beautiful parks and trails, close by lake and mountain recreational opportunities, Red Deer has many competitive advantages which make it an attractive place to live, work and raise a family. It is good to see medical professionals coming to Red Deer to serve families and individuals in our wonderful community.”

The addition of Dr. Janse van Rensburg brings the number of anesthesiologists working in Red Deer to 15.

“There are high volumes of patients who come from the surrounding area to access the specialist programs at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, and the addition of Dr. Janse van Rensburg will help ensure the people of Red Deer and area can access the services they need,” says Dr. Jennifer Bestard, Zone Medical Director for AHS Central Zone.

When he’s not working Dr. Janse van Rensburg enjoys spending time with his family, hiking and mountaineering, trail-running and cycling.

“My family looks forward to make the most of every season and all Alberta has to offer,” says Dr. Janse van Rensburg. “I hope to contribute in a meaningful way to the ongoing need for specialist anesthesia services at Red Deer Regional and become a part of the community.”

AHS continues to recruit for physicians across the Central Zone to meet community needs. AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician recruitment and retention committees.
