LETHBRIDGE – Alberta Health Services (AHS) is offering local and area residents an opportunity to play para ice hockey (formerly known as sledge hockey) for free this winter.
Para ice hockey is like traditional hockey with a few sport-specific modifications that enable individuals with physical impairment in the lower part of the body to play. Players sit in a specifically designed sled with two regular-sized hockey skate blades that allow the puck to pass underneath. Players use two sticks that have metal picks on the end to propel them on the ice. Able-bodied players are welcome to play. Therapeutic Recreation staff from the AHS South Zone will welcome and support participants in their journey to better health and well-being.
The program is made possible through partnerships with the Lethbridge Minor Hockey Association and the Lethbridge Sports Council. Participants can play a full season or sign up to try an individual session. Sessions run from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. at the Nicholas Sheran Ice Arena on the following dates:
All equipment is provided. Call ahead to reserve your spot. Remaining spots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Contact Shana Wandler at 403-382-0380 or email shana.wandler@ahs.ca.
