WESTLOCK — Local and area residents have improved access to primary care with the recruitment of a new family physician now practising in the community.

Dr. Emmanuel Omo-Osagie Ayoson, who goes by Dr. Ayoson, is a family medicine physician now practising at the Westlock Healthcare Centre and the Associate Medical Clinic. Dr. Ayoson joins a team of 14 other family medicine physicians in Westlock.

“It is great news to welcome to Dr. Ayoson to our community,” says Glenn van Dijken, MLA for Athabasca-Barrhead-Westlock. “We are fortunate to have him and I look forward to the positive impact he will make in our lives.”

Born and raised in Okpella, a small community in Edo state in midwestern Nigeria, Dr. Ayoson obtained his undergraduate medical education and completed his residency in family medicine in his home country. He immigrated in Canada in 2018 and lived in Manitoba before moving to Westlock this summer.

“Welcome, Dr. Ayoson, to the Westlock Healthcare Centre,” says Dr. Firdaus Mydeen, Associate Zone Medical Director for the North Zone of Alberta Health Services (AHS). “We are extremely pleased to have him join our team of healthcare professionals, and look forward to the exceptional care and contributions he will bring to our patients and colleagues.”

Outside of work, Dr. Ayoson’s interests include cycling, tennis, game hunting, cooking, juggling, singing and reading.

AHS continues to recruit for physicians across northern Alberta to meet community needs. AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician attraction and retention committees.
