WESTLOCK — The Westlock Healthcare Auxiliary Society recently celebrated a significant milestone this year — its 95th anniversary. Since the auxiliary’s founding in 1929, this volunteer group has been enhancing patient care at both the Westlock Healthcare Centre and the Westlock Continuing Care Centre through their generous financial contributions, equipment and services to improve the lives of patients.

“Over the years, the auxiliary has touched countless patients and families in the community, and their legacy continues to grow,” says Meagonn Forstey, seniors health manager with Alberta Health Services (AHS) in Westlock.

“The auxiliary has overseen significant donations and purchases that have directly benefited patient care. They work year after year to support holidays, such as Mother’s Day and Christmas, with individual flowers and gifts.

“Their financial contributions are significant, but if you asked any resident, they would probably be most moved by the volunteer hours spent directly with them. Many auxiliary members visit, porter to special events and assist on outings. It is truly remarkable.”

June Krysa, who’s been with the auxiliary since 2011 and became its president in 2021, says it’s the sense of community that drives their work. "This organization is about making a real difference in the lives of people.”

Krysa adds that contributions the auxiliary has made over the years include a $75,000 portable ultrasound system bought in 2022, as well as electric beds, stretchers and warming tables.

"We try to fulfil a 'wish list' each year," says Krysa. "This year, we provided a $30,000 warming table for the kitchen, which serves both the Healthcare Centre and the Continuing Care Centre.”

Another notable achievement, although before Krysa’s time, was the purchase of TVs for every room in the centre. The auxiliary also contributed to a mobility van for the Continuing Care Centre, allowing more accessible transportation for residents.

On top of these major contributions, the auxiliary provides a range of other supports, such as comfort items like blankets and slippers, and snacks, through their local gift shop.

"We’re very grateful to have the support of the auxiliary, to improve the local healthcare experience,” says Meagan McCoy-McLevin, site manager at Westlock Healthcare Centre. “The dedication of the auxiliary allows us to enhance the overall patient experience in Westlock.”

The auxiliary also offers a scholarship to high school students. "We’re always looking for ways to expand our reach and support our community, whether it’s through direct contributions, or by encouraging the next generation of volunteers," adds Karysa. "We're excited about the next five years as we approach our 100th anniversary. We have big plans for the future.”

The auxiliary currently has about 30 volunteers, with six lifetime members (who’ve dedicated 25 years or more to the group).

Krysa encourages those who are considering volunteering or donating to the cause to come on board.

"Volunteering is incredibly rewarding. For those who find joy in giving, the auxiliary is a great opportunity to make a real impact."

Forstey adds: “Whether it's through supporting the gift shop or assisting with activities for continuing care residents, volunteers can directly contribute to improving the patient experience.”
