HIGH LEVEL – Planning and design work is now complete for a new primary care and specialty medical clinic in High Level, with construction expected to begin this spring.
The new clinic, scheduled to open in 2027, will be an addition to the existing Northwest Health Centre, supporting primary care and specialty clinic access for the area.
“The development of this new primary care and specialty medical clinic at Northwest Health Centre is a prime example of our government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility for our local community,” says Dan Williams, MLA for Peace River and Minister of Mental Health and Addiction.
“Being able to provide more space for our physicians and bring in specialized services to High Level will have a positive impact on the health and well-being of everyone in our region.”
“This new clinic is a vital step in ensuring rural Albertans have access to timely, high-quality care close to home,” adds Ron Wiebe, MLA for Grande Prairie-Wapiti and Parliamentary Secretary of Rural Health (North). “It reflects our commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure in our growing northern communities.”
Site leadership, local physicians and the community have collaborated on planning for the clinic, which will have 28 exam rooms.
“This expansion is part of our ongoing work to build a stronger, more unified primary care system – one that puts people first, supports our front-line teams and brings care to where people are,” says Kim Simmonds, CEO of Primary Care Alberta, the new provincial health agency responsible for primary care across the province. “It’s a positive step toward a system that works better for everyone, whether care happens at home, in the community or right here in what will soon be High Level’s newly expanded clinic.”
Dr. Jennifer Parker, Associate Zone Medical Director for Alberta Health Services in High Level, adds the new facility will “expand our capacity to provide essential healthcare services and strengthen our ability to deliver comprehensive and timely care to our communities, fostering better health outcomes for our patients.”
The new clinic's construction represents a significant investment in High Level's healthcare infrastructure, aligning with the town’s evolving needs and enhancing access to vital medical services for residents in the region.
Alberta Health has approved $10.95 million for the project through the Rural Revitalization program.
