FORT McMURRAY — A newly recruited psychiatrist is now practising in the city, improving access to mental health services for local and area residents.
Dr. Wahab Daghmach is practising at the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre and the Stadek Clinic Downtown. At the hospital, he is supporting the emergency department, and inpatient and outpatient services. At the Stadek Clinic Downtown, he is providing community care.
“It is great news to welcome Dr. Daghmach to Fort McMurray,” says Brian Jean, MLA for Fort McMurray-Lac La Biche, and Minister of Energy and Minerals. “His expertise and support to mental health services will be invaluable to our local and area residents.”
“Dr. Daghmach's arrival reflects our commitment to providing top-quality care and making mental health services accessible to those in Fort McMurray and surrounding areas,” says Dr. Ade Ogunsona, North Zone Clinical Department Head for Recovery Alberta.
Dr. Daghmach received his medical training in Ukraine and Syria, with medical residencies in Syria and Saudi Arabia.
He previously worked as a psychiatrist in Qatar.
Originally from Syria, he moved to Canada in 2015, where he volunteered and conducted research focused on supporting the homeless population and drug use in Canada. He has also completed a research fellowship at the Bruyere Research Institute in Ottawa.
Dr. Daghmach moved to Fort McMurray from Montreal. He began working in Fort McMurray last month.
“We’re excited to welcome Dr. Daghmach to the Fort McMurray medical team,” says Dr. Jane Ojedokun, Zone Medical Director in the North Zone of Alberta Health Services (AHS).
“His expertise in mental health will be a valuable asset to the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre and the community. As a psychiatrist, he will help us deliver high-quality, compassionate care to patients in both emergency and ongoing treatment settings.”
Outside of work, Dr. Daghmach enjoys staying active by walking, spending time in nature and going to the gym. He and his wife have three sons.
