Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre construction to begin

May 27, 2025

PONOKA – Construction will soon begin at Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre as part of a project designed to help the facility improve access to surgery and procedures.

Alberta Health Services, in partnership with Alberta Infrastructure and its contractors, is expanding and upgrading the surgical department, as well as building an addition onto the northwest corner of the hospital that will house a relocated and modernized Medical Device Reprocessing Department where surgical instruments are sterilized and processed.

From the end of May to September, residents near the hospital (5800 57 Ave.) should expect increased traffic from work crews and construction noise in accordance with the Town of Ponoka bylaws.

In addition to construction on the hospital site, there will be a road closure at 59 St. at 59 Ave. between approximately late June and mid-July. This section of the street will be temporarily closed for two to three weeks to connect underground water services.

The new addition’s steel structure and outer shell will be built starting later in the fall. Interior redevelopment will be completed later, with full project completion anticipated in 2028.

Pedestrians and drivers are asked to move safely through the area and to be mindful of all signage and work crews.
