New kidney care centre now open in Grande Prairie

GRANDE PRAIRIE – The Sargent Family Kidney Care Centre in Grande Prairie is now open, providing expanded kidney care services to area residents.

Located in the former Cancer Clinic area at the QEII Ambulatory Care Centre, the Kidney Care Centre brings multiple services under one roof, significantly improving care and access. The newly consolidated space includes hemodialysis, home peritoneal dialysis, the Diabetic Nephropathy Prevention Clinic and the Chronic Kidney Disease Clinic.

The project was made possible thanks to a $3.9-million investment: $2.4 million through the Government of Alberta and $1.5 million from the local Sargent family via the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation.

“This new dialysis centre strengthens Grande Prairie’s health system by uniting services under one roof, ensuring better access to care and improved outcomes for patients,” says Matt Jones, Minister of Hospital and Surgical Health Services.

“The Chronic Kidney Disease Clinic is a new addition to this area, helping to bring proactive and preventative care closer to home for patients in the region,” adds Andrew Kwan, Patient Care Manager with Alberta Kidney Care-North, Alberta Health Services (AHS). “We’re very grateful to all the partners and supporters involved in making this possible.”

In addition, the hemodialysis unit has expanded from five to six stations, enabling care teams to provide regular dialysis treatments for nine additional patients each week with further expansion possible in the future. Home peritoneal dialysis, first introduced in 2022, has also grown to offer more local training and follow-up.

“My grandfather utilized kidney care throughout his life, so this expansion hits close to home for me,” says Nolan Dyck, MLA for Grande Prairie. “I’m very happy that more local patients can now access kidney care here in Grande Prairie. Having all local services together in one location provides more cohesive care for area residents.”

“Consolidating and expanding kidney care services in Grande Prairie is great news for the whole region,” adds Ron Wiebe, MLA for Grande Prairie-Wapiti and Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Health (North). “I’m excited to see the newly transformed space.”

Patients began receiving care in the new space in late August, with additional finishing touches added to the centre earlier this month.

“We are extremely grateful to the Sargent family for supporting this initiative,” says Sean Doerkson, Chief Executive Officer of the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation. “Improving access to this vital healthcare resource will enhance the quality of life for individuals with kidney disease and significantly impact our community in a positive way.”

Alberta Kidney Care-North provides assessment, treatment, and follow-up for people with kidney problems in the geographical area that includes central and northern Alberta, where more than 182,000 facility-based hemodialysis treatments were delivered last year. The program also provides other treatments for kidney failure, including home peritoneal dialysis, home hemodialysis and conservative care.

An aging population, rising diabetes rates leading to renal failure, and patients living longer on dialysis due to medical advancements are all factors contributing to increased demand for dialysis across the province.
