SPIRIT RIVER — Colleagues came together to recognize the many contributions of health care aides (HCAs) in this northern Alberta community on Health Care Aide Day (Oct. 18).
Seniors Health manager Sudha Devaraj drew upon staff appreciation funding and, with the help of Home Care personal support coordinator Felicia Meades, hosted a heartfelt HCA Day celebration for the Spirit River team.
“It was the perfect chance to recognize the dedication and compassion our HCAs bring to their work every single day,” says Devaraj. “Felicia, who herself started as an HCA and is now a supervisor, took the lead in organizing the event, creating a warm and welcoming space where our team could relax, connect and feel appreciated.”
To make the day even more special, Home Care nurses contributed items for a gift basket raffle. In fact, there were so many generous donations that organizers ended up with two big baskets, which became door prizes.
Spirit River Home Care has 18 health care aides serving both the community and the lodge.
“These are the people who form the backbone of care working on the front lines, supporting clients with empathy, skill and heart. Their impact on the lives of clients and families is truly beyond words,” says Devaraj.
When asked about the most rewarding moments of her career, HCA Sally Doble replied, “I cared for a client in the community for three years while she lived in her home. After COVID, she moved to the lodge, and I’ve continued supporting her there.
“I love the continuity of care we’re able to provide. We still promote her independence while helping her with day-to-day activities — and now she’s 102-years-old.”
Devaraj adds, “Celebrations like this are part of our ongoing efforts to support retention and show appreciation for this essential workforce.”
