Two Hill donor’s gift improves diagnostic imaging for his community

TWO HILLS — Every X-ray taken at Two Hills Health Centre reflects the generous heart of someone special — a donor whose gift brought a new, upgraded diagnostic imaging suite to the facility.

Though Melvin Verenka has lived in the Two Hills area all his life, he wasn’t born here. That’s because, at the time, his community didn’t have a hospital. Since then, he’s seen healthcare services grow in Two Hills — and has given back to his neighbours through his gifts to the facility.

“I believe in my own community,” he says. “I’ve seen a lot of change for the good over the years. I give to the Health Centre because it’s a way to help not just one person, but everyone.”

When Verenka asked staff what was needed most at the facility, they mentioned an outdated diagnostic imaging (DI) suite that needed a full upgrade.

Working with the Two Hills Health Foundation, Verenka donated $500,000 that, along with financial support from Alberta Health Services (AHS), brought the facility a fully modern suite as well as a mobile X-ray unit.

“It’s one of the most state-of-the-art machines in the province,” says Leane Young, a director of diagnostic imaging with AHS.

“Unlike the previous equipment at the facility, it allows technicians to instantly see X-ray images, which is much more efficient. This system is designed to minimize radiation dose while producing a detailed image. It’s also seamlessly integrated with our mobile unit, which can be used at the bedside to increase patient comfort.”

Verenka’s donation was recognized at a special event in April, which was attended by AHS staff from the facility and the Diagnostic Imaging team, as well as local dignitaries including Two Hills Mayor Michael Tarkowski and County of Two Hills Reeve Murray Philips.
