CALGARY – Premier Ed Stelmach and Alberta Health Services today officially opened the East Calgary Health Centre. More than 30 clinics and programs are at the centre of this new $10.6-million facility that brings together numerous health services under one roof to promote community-based care.
The East Calgary Health Centre, located at 4715 - 8th Avenue S.E., will improve access to a variety of services at one centralized location. The new 75,000 square foot site is a one-stop shop where a dedicated health team provides multiple services, including primary care; public health; chronic disease management; oral health; living well; addiction and mental health services; speech language services; and, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease services.
“The East Calgary Health Centre is a great foundation for community-based health care for the 134,000 residents of East Calgary,” said Premier Ed Stelmach. “The 5-Year Funding Plan we announced in this year’s provincial budget allows us to continue improving access to high quality health care services throughout Alberta.”
The programs and services offered at the East Calgary Health Centre also encourage and support lifestyles that help keep Albertans healthy as they age.
“Health centres such as these are the cornerstones of our local health care delivery models,” said Ken Hughes, Board Chair, Alberta Health Services. “Offering all these health care services in one location facilitates better access to health care and also addresses some of the unique health needs of the people living in east Calgary.”
Programs and services offered at the East Calgary Health Centre are targeted to the health needs of their particular community. For example, the population of east Calgary has a higher percentage of low-birth weight babies. Therefore, the East Calgary Health Centre provides specialized public health, prenatal and postpartum community services to help address this issue.
“Providing new and consolidated health services in this manner will help improve health outcomes in this community,” said Gene Zwozdesky, Minister of Health and Wellness.
“This is a great example of a health facility that works,” said Ray Danyluk, Minister of Infrastructure. “It works for patients, it works for staff, and it works for the community.”
The Alberta Government has provided nearly $5 billion for Alberta Health Services and Alberta Infrastructure to build or renew facilities across the province. Currently, AHS has more than 1,000 projects in various stages of completion across the province that will provide more accessible, sustainable, quality health care for Albertans.
Taking into account the diverse needs of Albertans, the Government of Alberta and AHS are strategically investing in the health system to support patients and communities to stay healthy and manage illness more effectively.
Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than 3.7 million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
