New family physician now practising in Hinton

September 8, 2014

HINTON — Local residents have improved access to primary care with the arrival of a new family doctor now practising in the community.

Dr. Leigh Beamish arrived in Hinton in July, following recruitment efforts by Alberta Health Services (AHS), the Government of Alberta, local physicians and community partners.

In AHS North Zone, three physician resource planners are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work closely with community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Physician Action Plan, and independent community physician recruitment and retention committees.

“Physician recruitment is not a one-person job,” says Ruth Martin-Williams, Chair of the Tamarack Health Advisory Council.

“It’s the undertaking of a community and, on behalf of the local health advisory council, it’s a pleasure to welcome Dr. Beamish to Hinton. We certainly hope she enjoys it here.”

Dr. Beamish received her medical degree in Edmonton and completed her studies and residency at the University of Alberta. In her spare time, she enjoys staying active by camping, hiking, skiing and playing hockey. She also enjoys travelling.

“I’m really looking forward to being close to the mountains and spending some time at Marmot this winter,” says Dr. Beamish.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
