ICU renovations will enhance patient care and safety

MEDICINE HAT – The intensive care and acute palliative care units at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital are moving back to their original locations after being relocated earlier this spring.

On Nov. 5, the intensive care unit (ICU) will move back to its original location on 4East; palliative care will move back to its original location on 6West on Nov. 19.

These units were temporarily relocated to allow for renovations in the ICU, which included the attachment of the new building to the existing building and some improvements to the ICU, including construction of a new medication room, shower and a redesigned nursing station.

“These renovations will result in enhanced patient safety and efficiency,” says Linda Iwasiw, Senior Operating Officer, Acute Care East South Zone.

“The new medication room provides nurses with the ability to prepare medications directly on the unit, safely and without unnecessary interruptions. And having a shower within the ICU provides patients with greater independence and privacy.”

Renovations continue on the geriatric assessment/rehabilitation unit. Once complete in early December, 10 beds unavailable during the temporary relocations will be restored: three in palliative care and seven on the geriatric assessment/rehabilitation unit.

Signage is being changed to help patients and visitors find their way.

AHS would like to thank the community for its ongoing patience during this construction period.
