Newly recruited physician anticipated to arrive in the community later this year

SLAVE LAKE — Physician recruitment efforts in Slave Lake continue to progress with the recent recruitment of a new family medicine physician.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has recruited Dr. Chris Igboamalu, a South African family physician with a sub-specialty in high-risk obstetrics. Dr. Igboamalu is currently working closely with AHS physician resource planners to finalize the immigration process. Once the immigration paperwork is completed, he is expected to arrive for a College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta assessment during late spring/early summer.

He is expected to start practising full-time in Slave Lake in the fall.

“I look forward to having another family physician with such advanced skills in obstetrics with whom to work,” says Dr. Keith Martin, a Slave Lake physician who also specializes in obstetrics.

“We are lucky to have such great support from our MLA and Tri-Council in promoting all the wonderful things our Slave Lake community has to offer. The support of our local leaders was fundamental to this physician’s successful recruitment.”

Dr. Kevin Worry, AHS North Zone Medical Director, says Dr. Igboamalu will be a welcome addition to the Slave Lake medical team.

“Dr. Igboamalu will help meet the community’s need for primary and prenatal care, while advancing AHS’ commitment to increase the number of Slave Lake families who can deliver their babies close to home,” says Dr. Worry. “We are continuing to aggressively recruit additional physicians to Slave Lake, and look forward to adding a general practitioner with anesthesia skills (GP-Anesthesia) to our team.”

Additional recruitment efforts are ongoing with two other physicians scheduled to tour Slave Lake for a site visit later this month, and two others are planned in May, one of whom is a GP-Anesthesia.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
